Blogger Erik Wemple has found a new example of Fox News distorting information to suit its political agenda. In a chart purporting to depict unemployment statistics, the trend line (which is what people look at) is mis-plotted. It shows data points, that are lower than others, as higher. The visual effect is to make people think that the unemployment statistics are worse than they are, and gives a wrong idea of the pattern of fluctuations. Check out the chart and the article here. Wemple correctly points out that only deliberate manipulation of the chart could account for the pattern.
It is one thing to editorialize; it is quite another to manipulate data and then show it as fact. We call this lying.
