In a rally outside Detroit, Mitt Romney said the following:
“No one’s ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place where both of us were born and raised.”
There were knowing cheers from the partisan crowd.
Think about this statement and what it signifies about Romney. A sly dig at Obama, referring to the Republican canard that he is a foreigner, certainly. But Mitt wants it both ways. He wants to use this canard without being thought so stupid as to believe it, so he says elsewhere that this is a non-issue.
What do you call a person who acts this way? Without being vulgar, I mean.
I asked a colleague about what might be a suitable adjective and he told me a little story. Romney’s dad, who ran for the Republican nomination against Barry Goldwater during the 1964 Presidential election, was born in Morocco to American parents, and the question whether he was eligible to become President came up. This was settled in his favor.
So I turn this over to my readers. Let me know what you think about this. And if it bothers you the way it bothers me, send money to http://www.barackobama.com
